Natural Pet Care

Cat Litter
Baking soda in the litter tray will help prevent odour.

Cleaning Fish Tanks
Rub the inside of the tank with salt to remove hard water deposits and algae, the rinse well before returning the fish to the tank. Plain salt must be used, not iodised.

Flea Spray - dogs
Slice up two lemons and pour nearly boiling water over them, and allow to soak overnight. Strain the liquid and store in spray bottles. Spritz your dog liberally then massage the solution into their coat. The citrus oil from the lemons kills and repels the fleas. It also makes your dog smell nice. Bedding and carpets around the home can also be sprayed.

Flea Spray - cats
Cats are slightly different as they hate being sprays and hate citrus. So for cats mix a solution of 30ml (1 oz) pennyroyal oil (found in health food stores) with 30ml (18 oz) of water. Sponge this solution onto your cat and massage it into the coat. You can also use this solution on dogs and your pets bedding.

Pennyroyal oil MUST be diluted as it is toxic to pets if used neat.

Invigorating goldfish
Occasionally add one teaspoon of salt to 1.2ltrs (2 pints) of fresh water at room temperature and put your goldfish in for about 15 minutes. Then return them back to their tank. This salty swim will make them healthier.

Pet Baths
Bathe pets with gentle herbal shampoos. Pesticide shampoos are too harmful to the environment and too much since simple soap and water will kill fleas if the soap is left on for about 10 minutes.

Pet Shampoo
This is a very pure pet shampoo, it is detergent free and the healing properties of the aloe vera help sooth your pets skin.

450ml (3/4 pint) water
2 teaspoons liquid castile soap
2 tablespoons aloe vera
1 teaspoon of vegetable glycerin or vegetable oil

Put all the ingredients in a jar and shake well. Wet your pets coat and the apply the shampoo a few tablespoons at a time. Lather well as you go. When done, rinse will and towel dry.

A final vinegar rinse (55ml (1/4 cup) apple cider vinegar with 673 (3 cups) warm water) will ensure a shiny coat. Please avoid your pets eyes.

Pet Odour Removal
A quick way to remove that 'wet dog' odour is to sprinkle their fur with baking powder the brush it through.
